Managing Editor, Shelterforce

The National Housing Institute (NHI), a nonprofit organization, is seeking a full-time Managing Editor for its bimonthly magazine, Shelterforce: The Journal of Affordable Housing and Community Building. Our offices are in Montclair, NJ.

Now in it?s 29th year, Shelterforce is the nation?s oldest continually published affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization journal. It is a forum for neighborhood practitioners ? including nonprofit organization staff, organizers, advocates, policymakers and funders? to discuss their work in revitalizing communities through the development of affordable housing, job training and organizing around issues such as living wages, school reform and other strategies. Our editorial mix includes articles written by journalists, practitioners, researchers and policymakers.

In recent issues we have published articles about the renewed interest in Newark, NJ by private developers, and how it is affecting nonprofit builders; the role of community development corporations (CDCs) in gentrifying neighborhoods; an innovative program in Minnesota to train women in the construction trades; the often-missed opportunities for developing urban brownfields; what CDCs and policymakers should do to attract investment in weak market cities; efforts to help the disabled secure housing and build assets to ensure their independence; and how Housing Works, the largest AIDS service organization in the US, is a model for how nonprofits can generate their own revenue without losing sight of their core mission. Applicants are strongly urged to read the magazine before sending a resume. Most of the articles that have appeared in Shelterforce since 1994 are posted online at http://www.nhi.org.

In addition to publishing Shelterforce, NHI conducts research. This year, we will finish a major study that looks at prevention, management and reuse of vacant and abandoned housing. We are also looking at financial and other market-based strategies to preserve un-subsidized affordable rental housing and we are preparing a report on housing policy for weak market cities.
