Position Summary

As we continue to expand our impact in greater Philadelphia, Camden, and surrounding communities, we are seeking a Managing Director of Community & District Partnerships to ensure that our growth strategy, community and district relationships, and corps member placement strategy maximizes the opportunity for student achievement in the region. The Managing Director of Community & District Partnerships will shape and drive relationships with partner schools, districts, community, and advocacy groups and will also set the strategic vision for corps member placement and credentialing. The Managing Director of Community & District Partnerships will report to the Executive Director of Teach For America Greater Philadelphia-Camden region and will be a member of the regional leadership team.

Teach For America is the national corps of top recent college graduates who commit to teach for at least two years in urban and rural public schools and become lifelong leaders in the effort to expand educational opportunity. In the 2010-2011 school year, more than 8,200 first- and second-year Teach For America corps members will be teaching in 39 regions across the United States. Since 1990, Teach For America corps members have reached more than 3 million students. More than 20,000 Teach For America alumni are working in education and many other fields, where they continue to advocate for students and families in low-income communities. While only one in six corps members say they were interested in the teaching profession before joining Teach For America, nearly two-thirds of our alumni remain in the field of education.

Team Overview

Greater Philadelphia-Camden

Founded in 2003, Teach For America – Greater Philadelphia-Camden has more than 300 corps members reaching more than 25,000 students in Philadelphia and Camden public schools. Additionally, over 700 alumni are working from all sectors to close the achievement gap in the area. The region is supported by a funding base of over $7 million, and approximately 30 regional staff members work to train and support corps members, continually strengthen relationships with local schools and districts, foster the leadership of local alumni, and continue to grow the regional funding base to ensure that Teach For America – Greater Philadelphia-Camden can have an even greater impact. By 2015, the region aims to support a corps of nearly 400teachers, allowing the region to affect the educational outcomes of over 30,000 students every year.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning and Leadership:
– Researching and developing a strategic plan for growth in Greater Philadelphia-Camden, and potential new partner districts
– Launching and executing campaigns to ensure that ambitious goals are achieved related to corps member matriculation, placement, and onboarding

Project and Team Management:
– Managing a three-person team to ensure the strategic placement of corps members in classrooms, schools, and districts across the region to support current education reform efforts and to maximize our growth, development and programmatic impact
– Managing communications with corps members and external constituents regarding corps members’ matriculation, teacher certification and testing requirements, orientation to Teach For America, and interview and hiring processes with individual partner schools and principals
– Ensuring incoming corps members meet all testing and certification requirements required by the state, district, and university partners in order to teach in region

Relationship Building:
– Partner with Executive Director and other regional leaders to continue to position Teach For America, Greater Philadelphia-Camden, as key driver of education reform in the region by actively driving perceptions and beliefs about Teach For America
– Cultivating relationships and alliances (in partnership with the executive director and program team) with leaders in partner schools, the school district, charter school partners, and potentially one or more other partner districts
– Cultivating relationships and alliances (with the executive director and program team) with labor unions and other external stake-holders and community groups as needed

Qualifications

Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
– Bachelor’s degree required
– Minimum 5-7 years professional work experience preferred
– Proven record of achieving ambitious results
– Proven ability to build and leverage relationships toward successful outcomes, build consensus even in the face of competing priorities, particularly in diverse settings
– Exceptionally strong strategic thinking
– Ability to execute in adversarial and constantly changing circumstances
– Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
– Superb organization, detail-orientation, and project management skills
– Ability to thrive in a goal-oriented, fast-paced, and entrepreneurial environment, including the ability to be flexible in project execution
