Overview: Clean Air Council is a 501(c)(3), member-supported environmental health advocacy organization whose mission is to protect everyone’s right to breathe clean air.
The Council is headquartered in Philadelphia. Council seeks, for the position of managing attorney, a self-starting individual with vision, initiative and demonstrated commitment to environmental public interest. The managing attorney will work with the Council legal staff and program staff on coordinating litigation, policy analysis and comment submissions within the context of the Clean Air Act and other federal state environmental statutes and regulations.
The managing attorney will participate in all aspects of the legal department’s work including outreach, fundraising, and administrative components. The managing attorney will perform a variety of activities and will coordinate the activities of the legal team of five to seven attorneys. Specifically, the managing attorney will coordinate legal assignments; will help write grant proposals and be responsible for grant fulfillment associated with legal work; will supervise legal interns and fellows; and will oversee all media and public relations arising out of the legal department’s work. In addition to managerial functions, the managing attorney will devote a portion of his or her time doing legal work similar to what the rest of the legal department does.
Applicant for the managing attorney position must be a graduate of an accredited law school with 4 or more years of experience as an attorney and admitted to a state bar –preference is given to members of the Pennsylvania Bar. Those with prior experience in managing other attorneys will be given special consideration. Applicant must be familiar with a variety of environmental issues that impact air quality.
A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The managing attorney reports to the Chief Counsel/Executive Director.
