Malaria in the Classroom: from life cycle to hands on bioinformatics

The goal of this free Genomics for Teachers workshop is to share activities that can be used in the classroom. In this workshop Dr. Omar Harb, Education and Scientific Outreach manager for the Eukaryotic Pathogen Databases at the University of Pennsylvania, will provide:

a) an introduction to the Eukaryotic Pathogen Bioinformatic Resource (http://eupathdb.org).

b) an introduction to various parasites that cause disease in humans touching on phylogenetic relationships.

c) an introduction to Plasmodium falciparum (life cycle, genome, disease), the causative agent of malaria.

d) hands-on training using the Plasmodium genomic database (http://plasmoDB.org).

Activities will be demonstrated on a big screen, but participants are highly encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet having the capacity to connect to wireless, to work through the web-based activities themselves.
