Event Description:
Grant-writer. Curriculum developer. Supervisor. Teacher. Budget-Maker. Bridge-Builder. Student Outcome-evaluator. Scholar. Leader. Colleague. Van-Driver. Mentor. These are all roles that community engaged professionals play on a weekly basis as the stewards of their institution’s community engagement agenda.
Such positions require multiple skills, flexibility, and sense of agency. This can be one of the best jobs in the world, but requires reflection and planning to make sure that priorities are identified and time allocated to pursue them.
The MAKING IT MATTER One Day Retreat aims to provide this time away from email, meetings, and daily campus life to reflect, engage in individual and organizational strategic planning, connect with colleagues from the region, and re-energize. Sponsored by Connecticut Campus Compact and facilitated by Dr. KerryAnn O¹Meara of the University of Maryland, the retreat will engage participants in discussion and training in:
- Saying Yes and No Strategically
- Developing Your Brand
- Using Data Strategically
- Leadership Strategies
About Dr. KerryAnn O¹Meara:
Dr. KerryAnn O’Meara is Associate Professor of Higher Education at the University of Maryland and Director of their ADVANCE grant which works to create work environments that invest in individual learning, agency, networks, and recognized commitments. KerryAnn also has professional experience as a director of community engagement, and in working with faculty to support it. She is not a stranger to managing multiple priorities (work roles, work-family) and will share what she has learned from colleagues at the University of Maryland as well as her scholarship and experience leading the UMD ADVANCE grant about identifying priorities and making time for them, developing one’s brand, using the collection and analysis of data as a tool for organizational change, and identifying leadership strategies that work with your strengths. However, the retreat also provides a venue for participants to learn from each other and this is why we will highlight participant best practices and experiences in bullet sessions throughout the day.
