Maker Space and Technology Manager (Full-Time), The Workshop School

Posted by The Workshop School on May 24, 2022

The Workshop School is a nationally recognized, project-based high school within the School District of Philadelphia. Our vision is to graduate students who value learning and growth, build community, and know how to shape their lives and our world. The school is managed through a contract between the School District of Philadelphia and our nonprofit organization, Project Based Learning Inc.

Because designing, building and creating are central to our model, Workshop students and staff frequently access and use our shop space as part of their project work. We are also a 1:1 school with most students doing their work on chrome books. Supporting our technology and shop infrastructure is therefore critical to our mission.

The Maker Space and Tech Manager is not just about equipment and technology, however. We need someone who is comfortable teaching and working with high school students as well as training and supporting adults. We are looking for candidates who are excited about both people and technology, and who will bring a high level of energy and commitment to the work.

Maker space management

  • Shop management. Supervise and manage the school’s fab shop, including conventional and advanced manufacturing technologies (CNC, Laser cutter, 3D printer etc). This includes scheduling shop access, maintaining supplies and equipment, and ensuring that technology and materials are secure.
  • Project support. Coordinate with teaching staff around student projects utilizing the maker space. Includes helping teachers understand capabilities of shop technology, training groups of teachers and students, and directly supporting students’ work in the shop.
  • Summer programming. Run a 4-6 week summer program for 12-15 Workshop School students based in the maker space.

Technology management

  • Help desk. Staff and oversee tech support for school staff and students, including chrome book management and maintenance, SmartBoard support, and assistance with other hardware and peripherals.
  • Google domain support. Assist with domain-wide settings and installations, user and group maintenance.
  • Inventory management. Distribute, store, and inventory all school hardware, including chrome books, staff laptops and desktop computers.
  • Supervision. Supervise Americorps or student interns for help desk staffing, if available.
