If we want our children to become strong readers, we have to invest in the people who teach them.
Right now, the teacher shortage crisis in the United States has left roughly 400,000 positions unfilled or staffed by under-certified educators. The ripple effects show up in student achievement, including literacy outcomes, and in school culture, where vacancies and turnover can affect students’ sense of belonging and connection.
Join us at our next Read by 4th Lunch and Learn for a conversation with Scott Gaiber, Deputy Chief of Talent Initiatives at Elevate 215, about the Philadelphia Citywide Talent Coalition’s work to recruit, retain, and develop diverse, effective teachers.
We’ll explore the realities shaping Philadelphia’s teacher workforce, from vacancies and emergency permits to changing enrollment and teacher retention. We’ll also look at what teachers need to feel prepared and supported in the classroom, and what it will take to make Philadelphia’s public schools a place where great educators want to build a lasting career.
