In recognition of Mental Retardation Awareness Month:
Loretta Claiborne, champion runner and Special Olympics athlete, shares her inspirational story.

Born partially blind with mild mental retardation, Loretta Claiborne’s mission in life is to show that people with mental and physical disabilities are equal to those without. She is a celebrated athlete who credits Special Olympics with helping her realize that her tremendous athletic talent could be used for good. Loretta’s personl and spiritual journey includes crossing the finish lines of more than 25 marathons, carrying the torch in the International Special Olympics, receiving numerous awards and honors, and attending a White House gala. She is also a black belt in karate, speaks four languages (including sign language) and has holds an honorary doctorate degree from Quinnipiac College. No wonder her life was the subject of a Disney made-for-TV movie!
