Job Qualifications:
The On-Call Literacy Instructor will be responsible for providing basic adult education, literacy instruction and career development/work-based foundation skills to program participants. Primary responsibilities include providing basic literacy instruction in a work force context; teaching units of math, reading, science, social studies, writing, and literature; assisting with curriculum development, implementation, and incorporating workforce skills in the curriculum; assisting students with critical thinking skills development; coaching students in overcoming barriers to attendance and learning; monitoring time and attendance and preparing data for e-Data; providing case notes on learners’ progress; and facilitating with orientations, recruitment, assessment and retention of students. In addition, the Literacy Instructor will be completing training required by the PA Department of Education and Mayor’s Commission on Literacy; attending staff meetings and contributing to the design of the adult literacy program; collaborating with staff from other programs; and assisting in the development of a program improvement and professional development plan. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field and at least one year of experience working with academically and socially challenged adult populations, especially young adults. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required Skills and Abilities:
*Ability to work with a flexible schedule including evening and weekend hours.
*Familiarity with job readiness instruction resources.
*Demonstrated ability to teach, motivate and relate to adult learners.
*Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse population of faculty, staff and students.
*Demonstrated organizational, problem solving, and management skills for classrooms and self supervision.
*Demonstrated proficiency with MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint or comparable software.
Preferred:
*Knowledge of PDE/ABLE guidelines, and eData System to monitor adult learner’s participation and progress.
*Experience in workforce/organizational development, Information Technology training, and college access (SAT).
This is a Grant-Funded, Part-time, On-call position.
