Literacy Instructor, Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association

Based in the Oxford Circle neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA, the Oxford Circle Christian Community Development Association (OCCCDA) is seeking a Literacy Instructor for elementary aged students. The mission of OCCCDA is “to extend healing and hope in the Oxford Circle community, believing that God’s purpose of reconciling all people to Jesus leads us to minister on spiritual, physical, social & economic levels.” The Literacy Instructor is responsible for using best practice models for literacy to plan and lead instruction during out of school time (OST) programming for 5 hours per week (instruction and prep time included). Programming is scheduled Mondays-Fridays, between the hours of 3pm-6pm and the instruction time would be scheduled twice weekly with two small groups of approximately 15 children.

The position would continue during summer camp, which is held from July 8, 2013 to August 15, 2013. At that time, instruction and prep hours would be scheduled to total 10 hours weekly. Summer camp is scheduled Monday-Thursday from 9am-3pm and the instruction time would be scheduled twice weekly with three small group classes of approximately 20 children.

Goals would include conducting writing and reading workshops, integrating technology to enhance and supplement lessons, and engaging students in multiple forms of writing, critical reading and ways it connects them to each other, their community and the world around them.

Job responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement age-appropriate, critical & engaging curriculum for bi-weekly instruction to kids in grades K-8 that is responsive to their needs & our mission
  • Work one-on-one and/or in small groups with kids needing extra help in their reading and developing critical literacy skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with parents, high school volunteers, & staff
  • Implement positive discipline and classroom management structure for program

Job qualifications:

§ A commitment to the Oxford Circle community and to the holistic vision of the OCCCDA.

§ Bachelor degree in Education or related field and two (2) years’ experience teaching. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

§ Provide current clearances (child abuse and criminal) employment and obtain a CPR and First Aid Certification within 3 months of employment.
