LISTEN UP!: Young Artists Have Something to Say…
About Domestic Violence in Their Lives
[email protected]

Children don’t have to be physically or verbally abused themselves to be hurt by domestic violence, which is why, with the help of the Alonya P. Saraka Children?s Fund, Lutheran Settlement House (LSH) holds an annual awareness and prevention event for children and young adults called Listen Up: Young Artists Have Something to Say About Domestic Violence.

Part of LSH?s annual Purple Ribbon Campaign, Listen Up! is the only creative arts initiative in Philadelphia addressing the impact of domestic violence on children.

This year LSH partnered with the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (PMAP) to gather entries for the contest. Students between the ages of 10 and 18 from Big Picture, a year-long mural-training opportunity provided by the PMAP, were invited to express their feelings and opinions about violence in the home through LSH?s yearly art contest. Listen Up! – Over the past eight years, some of the Listen Up! participating children have chosen positive messages orscenes to portray how society may combat domestic violence. Others have chosen to depict what violence might feel orlook like.

This year?s winning pieces will be displayed and celebrated by LSH?s Bilingual Domestic Violence Program?s judges, guests, & donors, at a Reception and Ceremony on October 27, 2005 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Art Jazz Gallery, 53 North 2nd Street in Old City, Philadelphia. This event is sponsored by Beneficial Savings Bank and the Department of Human Services. Admission is free.
