The Life Skills Counselor is responsible for client supervision, individual and group life skills counseling, and all aspects of day-to-day operation of program apartments, including site maintenance, community relations issues, and liaison related contacts. The Life Skills Counselor is under the Vice President of Independent Living’s and Southeast Independent Living Regional Director and Associate Director’s authority.

Essential Functions of Position:

  • To assist youth in developing and implementing an individual plan for independence including housing, employment, education, and life skills goals.
  • To model and practice independent living skills with youth including but not limited to: career planning, daily living, money management, self-care, and study skills.
  • To provide youth-centered, culturally sensitive, and strengths-based services to all assigned clients.
  • To monitor and maintain positive community relations in a proactive manner.
  • To complete all necessary paperwork and reports in a timely manner.
  • To monitor youth attendance at school and employment, and compliance with program rules.
  • To make unscheduled, surprise visits to clients outside of normal business hours.
  • To assist in maintaining the site in compliance with regulations and/or program grant requirements as applicable.
  • To assist youth in scheduling medical/dental appointments and ensure appointments occur.
  • To proactively address client issues from a positive youth development perspective.
