“Teams Run to Honor Loved Ones Lost to Gun Violence”

April 29 “Legs Against Arms VI” 5K Run/Walk Towards a Safer Philadelphia

Run, walk, roll to strengthen your limbs as we oppose illegal handguns in Philadelphia. On our strategic course from prevention of through healing from violence, Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) hosts the 6th annual Legs Against Arms 5k Run on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Saint Joseph’s University. Race registration is at 7am and the race starts at 8:30 am at 54th and Overbrook Avenue.

In 2011, there were over 800 runners with 16 teams participating to honor lost loved ones.  As the     daughter of a mom lost to gun violence in 2005 said, “My immediate and extended family lacked a place to truly celebrate the life of my mom. We did not have a time that solely focused on the good of her life without feeling the pain of our loss. The Legs Against Arms Run/Walk provided my family with the opportunity to participate in an event that she would have thoroughly enjoyed. We have the chance to remember all the traits we love about my mom with the people she loved most.” Team Trish Member

Supported by the City of Philadelphia, Legs Against Arms VI is part of PSR’s commitment to interrupt the cycle of youth violence and to change social norms that celebrate violence.

“Philadelphia’s youth violence epidemic has become a significant threat to the public health,” said past PSR Board President Paul Lyons, M.D. “It is a medical problem that requires a social solution. Legs Against Arms is a positive step toward engaging society, a key part in reversing this deadly threat.”
