LawWorks offers seminar on nonprofits and political activity
Philadelphia LawWorks, Pfizer, and DLA Piper LLP are co-sponsoring a free seminar on the legal framework of public advocacy on Tuesday, May 17th from 10:30am to 3:30pm.
The mission of most nonprofits doesn’t end at providing direct services, but creating awareness of the issue and interest in prevention requires time and resources and may risk loss of support from some donors.
The seminar will focus on how nonprofits can engage in public advocacy on behalf of its cause while complying with IRS regulations and lobbying disclosure laws. It will also discuss the crucial distinction between lobbying and campaigning, which a nonprofit must understand to avoid the risk of losing its tax-exempt status.
Presenters will also address the need to balance the benefits of public advocacy with the potential loss of community support resulting from such activity. Topics covered in the seminar include IRS regulations regarding nonprofits and political activities, IRS and federal restrictions on lobbying, and first-hand advice on the practical issues that need to be considered before engaging in any public advocacy.
The seminar is designed for executive directors, chief administrative officers and program staff that engage in public advocacy. It will take place at DLA Piper LLP, 1650 Market Street, Suite 4900 in Center City. RSVPs are required by going here.
