John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Announces Knight Brothers 21st Century News Challenge
Deadline: December 1, 2006 (Letters of Inquiry)
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (<a href="http://www.knightfdn.org/">http://www.knightfdn.org/</a>) invites proposals for innovative ways to shape the future of news and community.
The Knight Brothers 21st Century News Challenge is seeking new ideas, pilot projects, commercial products, and leadership initiatives that will improve the flow of information and news in the public interest. In 2007, the foundation will award a total of $5 million to individuals, organizations, or businesses that can demonstrate how their ideas will transform community life.
The program seeks new ways to understand news and act on it, including new ways to collect, prepare, and distribute information, news, and journalism that reveals hard-to-know facts, identifies common problems, clarifies community issues, and points out practical courses of action; new ways for people to communicate interactively to better understand one another, generate real passion in solving local problems, and share the know-how they need to improve their communities; and new ways for people to use information, news, and journalism to imagine their collective possibilities as communities, and to set and reach common community goals.
The award categories for this initiative are: Ideas; Pilot projects; Leadership; Commercial Products and Investments; and Open. The number of awards will be determined by the number of top-quality proposals in each category.
The award is open to nonprofits, companies, or individuals. Non-U.S. citizens are welcome to apply, and there is no age requirement.
See the program’s Web site for program information, an FAQ, and details on submitting a Letter of Inquiry.
