Knight Foundation Launches Contest to Fund the Best Ideas for the Arts in Philadelphia
Deadline: October 31, 2010
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced that it will provide support for the Philadelphia arts community through the three-year, $9 million Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia.
The challenge, which is open to established arts institutions, independent artists, businesses, service organizations, and individuals who have a great idea for the arts, has only three rules: 1) the idea must be about the arts; 2) the project must take place in or benefit Philadelphia; and 3) grant recipients must be able to match the Knight Foundation’s commitment with other funds.
The initial two-question application is designed to encourage non-traditional applicants. The initial application period will run from October 5 -31, 2010. Selected finalists will then submit more detailed proposals, with the winners to be announced in spring of 2011.
The Knight Arts Challenge began in 2008 in Miami, where the initiative is now in its third year. Grant recipients there have included an independent record store, a print shop, theater and dance groups, performance and gallery spaces, festival and event organizers, museums, and municipalities.
