Service-learning that starts with kids
Think 4th graders could convince the chairman of the Philadelphia School Reform Commission to shave his head to help raise money for pediatric cancer research?? Well, at ?Kids Speak Out? on Wednesday, June 4 you?ll hear about that effort and other accomplishments and experiences shared by 330 Philadelphia public school students who participated in service-learning projects facilitated this year by Need in Deed. Since 1987, Need in Deed has worked with students, teachers and community organizations to prepare young people for civic responsibility and service to others. Through the MY VOICE process, students identify a social issue or problem that becomes the focus for their service-learning project. The approach is grounded in connections to the curriculum and supports a relevant and meaningful service component. The event will take place at Harrison Auditorium of the University Museum from 10:00-12 noon. For more information, contact Need in Deed at (e-mail) office@needindeed.org. or (phone) 215 242 6333.
