KaBOOM! to Award $1 Million in ‘Play Everywhere’ Grants in Philadelphia
Kids spend 80 percent of their time outside of school, but cities often lack opportunities for play and informal learning outside the classroom.
KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit dedicated to bringing balanced and active play into the daily lives of all kids, particularly those growing up in poverty in America, is inviting applications for Play Everywhere Philly, a new city-wide competition aimed at filling this gap by supporting child development and literacy skills through interactive play installations in everyday locations across Philadelphia.
Through the program, KaBOOM! will award $1 million in Play Everywhere grants to groups interested in working with designers to create playful learning features for bus stops, sidewalks, and commercial districts where kids can play and learn together with their caregivers. Play Everywhere Philly is funded by the William Penn Foundation https://williampennfoundation.org/).
Play Everywhere Philly applicants will have the opportunity to receive technical assistance from two organizations: Playful Learning Landscapes, which will work with applicants to incorporate playful learning approaches into their project designs; and the Community Design Collaborative, which will provide applicants with technical design assistance.
Groups from all sectors are welcome to apply, including government entities, neighborhood organizations, community-based groups, nonprofit organizations, local business groups, and faith organizations. Installations are not intended to be used in formal learning environments such as schools and daycares.
Preliminary ideas are due January 31, 2020, with full proposals due by March 13, 2020. Winning projects will be notified in April, with the one-year implementation period scheduled to start in May.
To be eligible for a grant, the project must be cited within the city limits of Philadelphia.
