The Food Trust is seeking a bright and motivated intern to support the work of the Supermarket Campaign Team. The Supermarket Campaign aims to increase the access to and availability of fresh, nutritious foods in underserved areas in Pennsylvania by promoting the development of supermarkets. To achieve this, the Supermarket Campaign works with numerous stakeholders, including the supermarket industry, policymakers, and community organizations. This Campaign is unique in its efforts to bridge the gap between public health and economic development. This internship will provide the valuable opportunity to work in a dedicated, creative organization and to learn about the dynamic food retail industry.

Responsibilities: The intern would work with staff on a wide range of activities related to outreach and research. Some examples of projects include: assessing areas of the state that are underserved in terms of supermarket access, conducting research on rural food systems, identifying best practices and models of green/sustainable supermarket design and legislation standards, researching economic development resources, and providing technical assistance to corner store operators interested in increasing their capacity to stock and merchandize healthy food products. Specific projects will be selected based on the intern?s interest interests and skills. The internship will be based in Philadelphia.

Skills and Qualifications:
 Excellent research and writing skills
 Experience with data analysis
 Experience with all Microsoft programs, including Excel and Power Point
 Attention to detail
 Ability to multi-task
 Enthusiasm for learning about the food retail industry
 Preferred Majors/Academic Disciplines include: Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Sociology, Architectural Design, Business, Public Health, Public Policy

Timeline: The Food Trust is looking for an intern for the Summer 2006, approx June ? August (dates flexible). An ideal candidate would be available for close to 25 hours per week, and be able to commit to at least a 10 week internship; longer internships are welcomed and preferred. There is also the possibility to extend the internship into the year for independent study credit.

Compensation: There is no stipend for this internship. Students who have been awarded federal work-study employment can get paid for this internship from that stipend.
