Individual Donor Coordinator, Philadelphia Student Union

The Philadelphia Student Union (PSU) is a community based youth organizing and leadership development organization led by high school aged youth with adult support. PSU is a national leader in the youth organizing movement with school based, citywide, statewide, and national organizing campaigns and strategies, a well-developed media and communications infrastructure, and supportive programs for members. Four years ago the Philadelphia Student Union raised less than $10,000 from individuals with an annual appeal and end of the school year event. In the last four years the Philadelphia Student Union has built an individual donor program that now raises $30,000 – $35,000 a year using four distinct activities: Annual Appeal, Major Donor, Sustainers (Monthly Donors) and End of the year Fundraising Event.

Position Summary

The Philadelphia Student Union seeks an organized and detailed oriented person to lead our staff, board and members in implementing an already active yearlong individual donor strategy. The position is part time with the possibility of increasing to fulltime after an evaluation of the program. The Individual Donor Coordinator will be responsible for maintaining the program and growing the number of individual donors.

Responsibilities:

May – September – Organize a public event to get new contacts.
August- September – Organize PSU’s Annual Appeal mailing
September – October – Participate and lead PSU staff and board in implementing PSU’s Major Donor Campaign
November – February – Participate and lead staff, students, board and supporters to implement PSU’s Sustainer Campaign.
March – June – Organize an end of the year fundraising event to honor graduating seniors and celebrate the year’s victories.

Ongoing:

Work with Youth Media Organizer to send out two mass emails a month to our list of supporters.
Work with youth media organizer to incorporate fundraising in newsletter and radio pieces
Work with Alumni Engagement staffer to do alumni specific outreach and fundraising asks connected to each campaign
Ensure that staff and students are collecting new contact information. Enter that contact information into database
Identify fundraising opportunities connected to PSU organizing campaigns and leadership development activities.
Work with youth media organizer and staff to get new Newsletter subscriptions
Stay abreast of best practices and trends in individual and grassroots fundraising
Recruit, hire, train and supervise 1-2 interns from a local college or university.

Qualifications:

Minimum two years experience doing individual donor management
Minimum two years experience doing event planning
Ability to work independently, self-motivated and task-oriented
Minimum two years experience coordinating staff and/or volunteers
Proficient in Microsoft Office and GoogleDocs
Strong writing skills
Strong oral communication skills; comfortable presenting information representing PSU in the broader community
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively and professionally with a diverse range of people

Experience with Salesforce or similar constituent relationship management systems a plus
Experience with organizing, policy advocacy, and/or educational policy reform a plus
Experience with group facilitation and popular education techniques in running and designing interactive trainings a plus
Working knowledge of Philadelphia public education system a plus
Demonstrated commitment to social justice and institutional change a plus
Experience with campaign-based organizing a plus

Compensation:
Starting salary is commensurate with experience.
Part time employees receive prorated vacation days, sick days and holidays.
