Identity Theft: The theft and manipulation of the Black male identity

In television and film, we see black male identity/black manhood as trivial and light-hearted. Negative and misrepresented depictions of black manhood in music and culture, specifically within hip-hop and rap, have been well documented by scholars, advocates, and detractors. This free event will explore the Black male identity through the lens of the media and popular culture. It will also examine how this identity has shaped the Black man’s perception of himself.

This conference will feature panelist Michael Coard, Esq. and keynote speaker Dr. James Peterson. Mr. Coard is a Philadelphia criminal defense attorney and community activist. Dr. Peterson is the Director of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of English at Lehigh University.
