Ideas for Eat In, Act Out Week

The Boston-based Food Project is currently organizing the second annual ?Eat In, Act Out?, a week of community sponsored events across the nation that celebrate the importance of enjoying local foods (July 31st ? August 6th).

The main themes of this week are:

* To encourage communities to eat locally and think critically about their food choices
* To build a sustainable food system where everyone has access to affordable, healthy food
* To highlight the capabilities and importance of youth in this movement

A few past events have included: organizing a bike tour of local farms/gardens, working with chefs to offer a nightly meal made from local ingredients, hosting a food-related community forum or movie, offering youth-led cooking classes, visiting store managers and encouraging them to sell more local produce, etc. There are endless possibilities that can be tailored to meet the needs of your community.

It seems like the potential benefits of this week are strong: cementing community partnerships, bringing awareness to local food issues, increasing sales of area produce, and increasing the media attention you can bring to your work, etc. A few of us in San Diego have decided to use this week to connect our disjointed local food organizing efforts, so hopefully it can be of some use to some of you.
