HSP?S NEIGHBORHOOD TOURS
Discover Philadelphia?s rich history beyond its historic center! Board a trolley and discover two of the city?s earliest neighborhoods, Greater Northern Liberties and Old Southwark. Located north and south of the original city center (now the historic district), these areas attracted African Americans and new immigrants for more than two centuries. Today, they remain diverse and vibrant social and economic centers. Due to rising real estate prices, though, these historical treasures are in imminent danger of losing their multiethnic mix. Along the tour routes and stops, we will listen and look for hidden histories revealed, lost voices recalled, the changing use of sites over time, and hear current residents? stories ? all illustrating the power of place and how memories are embodied in space.
These tours are organized by The Historical Society of Pennsylvania with the input and assistance of local community members. They are made possible by generous support from Heritage Philadelphia, an arm of the Pew Family Foundation.
