Handbook for Integrating Service Learning into the Art Classroom

Posted by on June 4, 2007

As part of its 4th annual Service Learning and the Arts statewide conference in 2006, Florida Learn & Serve* produced My Art . . . My World: A Handbook for Integrating Service Learning into the Art Classroom. This publication provides useful information, lesson plans, and resources for K-higher education art education teachers and administrators interested in making service learning part of their pedagogy. Co-authored by Raquel Kennedy Roy and Dr. Min Cho, and edited by Dr. Cho (the Florida Learn & Serve deputy director from 2000-2006), My Art . . . My World has three sections:

1. Foundations?an introduction and four case studies of higher education service learning and the arts projects
2. Lesson Plans?48 lesson plans, subdivided by grade level and into four broad categories: (1) Creating civic-minded students, (2) Preventing drugs and promoting tolerance, (3) Intergenerational interaction, and (4) Helping the environment
3. Resources?an annotated list of web sites (for both service learning and for arts-related lesson plans), grants that can support arts-related service learning, and service-learning award programs

An updated, complete, and full-color .pdf file of the publication may now be downloaded for free from the Florida Learn & Serve web site:

In the near future, copies of the publication will also be made available for purchase at (printing and mailing) cost. We hope you will find this publication useful in your arts-related service-learning activities.
