One of the oldest cities in the United States, Hampton, Virginia, recently marked the 10th anniversary of its Healthy Neighborhood Initiative, a signature effort of one of the most significant initiatives to build a more collaborative and inclusive civic culture and reinvent local government. Long spotlighted in David Osborne’s reinventing government trilogy, Hampton has taken it upon itself to shine light on its neighborhood efforts with the publication of Learning from Neighborhoods: The Story of the Hampton Neighborhood Initiative, 1993- 2003. (Disclosure: I am one of the authors.)
In addition to this downloadable document, there is a soup-to-nuts replication manual – Hampton Neighborhood Initiative: Lessons and Resources for Other Communities. This 600+ page binder includes many internal documents as well as summaries of each of the key elements of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative. To order the replication manual, click here.
