United Way’s New Initiative, The Neighborhood Funding Stream, Now Accepting Grant Applications Targeting the American Street Empowerment Zone

United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania (UWSEPA) is now accepting grant applications from eligible nonprofit organizations serving the American Street Empowerment Zone. The deadline for grant applications is Monday, April 18, 2005.

In 2004, the City of Philadelphia Empowerment Zone (EZ) and United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania (UWSEPA) announced their partnership in a signature project called the Neighborhood Funding Stream (NFS). The Neighborhood Funding Stream of the American Street Empowerment Zone (ASEZ) will now accept grant applications from organizations committed to improving the well-being of at-risk youth in the community. Those organization serving the American Street Empowerment Zone, which encompasses roughly the area between Girard and Lehigh Avenues and Front and 6th Streets, are encouraged to submit an application. Of particular interest are applications from organizations offering to address the socio-economic, emotional and educational needs of at-risk youth ages 12 to 20. (UWSEPA released its request for proposals targeting the North Central Empowerment Zone in January 2005.)

The ASEZ-NFS Grant Program will award approximately 10 to 15 grants ranging from $12,000 to $15,000 for projects in which a modest grant can make a noticeable difference in the community. Proposals that address a well-defined need, offer a concrete plan of action, and request a specific amount will be considered. In addition, organizations must identify a measurable involvement and defined impact in the American Street Empowerment Zone.
