OPERATION UNDERSTANDING – Graduate Internship
Operation Understanding’s mission is to develop a cadre of African-American and Jewish leaders educated about each other’s histories and cultures to lead the Philadelphia communities to a greater understanding of diversity. Operation Understanding identifies future leaders, exposes them to cross-cultural experiences, and provides them with the leadership and facilitation skills to promote understanding amongst their peers. The organization was co-founded by the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Jewish Committee and the Urban League of Philadelphia.
General Description:
The graduate intern will be responsible for assisting the executive director with daily administrative activities, fundraising, and general operations of Operation Understanding. The intern will learn from one-on-one briefings and personal development with OU’s director and contact with the board of directors. The ideal candidate will have unfettered access to all components of the organization and will grow to understand the behind-the-scenes operations of an evolving nonprofit, while taking an active role in the organization’s development.
Responsibilities and benefits could include:
• Assist with implementation of strategic plan and organization growth
• S/he may assist with the operation responsibilities of the program.
• Fundraising Research: Investigate potential new fundraising opportunities, corporate partnerships, and grants; and maintain accurate and organized records of research.
• Event Planning: Planning and support for upcoming fundraising and community events.
• Logistical assistance to coordinate domestic or international summer travel programs; including travel, itinerary and accommodations.
• Media Outreach: Increase OU’s public persona; send press releases periodically, follow up on leads for coverage.
• Building and Managing Social Media, assist in creating social media network of alumni and supporters.
• Other duties as assigned
Job Qualifications and Experience:
• Competent, organized and congenial personality to work closely with executive director, board of directors, committees, students and volunteers.
• Knowledge and expertise in administrative and financial areas.
• Must be well organized and detail-oriented
• Experience with development/grant writing preferred
• Skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience using Quicken or fundraising software a plus.
• Must be able to take direction and be self motivated.
• Connection to and experience with the Jewish and/or African American cultures a plus.
• Experience maintaining social media and building online communities a plus.
• Experience with media outreach a plus.
The schedule is flexible, with office hours required and some evening and weekend commitments.
This is an unpaid internship.
