Civic House is the University of Pennsylvania’s hub for civic engagement and social justice education. Civic House promotes mutually beneficial collaborations between Penn and Philadelphia community nonprofit organizations. Civic House’s framework emphasizes students’ ongoing growth and reflection as they develop, apply, and integrate their community engagement, social justice passions, leadership skills, and academic pursuits.
The Graduate Assistant (GA) functions as an integral member of the Civic House staff. The GA will assist with the planning, development, and supervision of Civic House’s community engagement and social justice educational programming. The GA will help foster critical, meaningful, and intentional learning opportunities for students, while also helping to create deep, reciprocal relationships with our community partners.
This is a 20 hours/week position for August 2019 – May 2020, with compensation of $15.00 – $20.00/hour, depending upon skills and experience and payment weekly.
GA duties may include the following:
- West Philadelphia Tutoring Project
- Oversee a program that aims to promote mutually beneficial relationships between University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia students, primarily through weekly tutoring sessions.
- Supervise Executive Board members, who serve as liaisons with tutors and partner schools.
- Develop and implement comprehensive educational training program for student leaders and Executive Board members.
- Connect Civic House social justice framework to the Board’s efforts.
- Build relationships with our school partners through site visits and mid-semester check-ins.
- Work with GSE faculty to support educational trainings for tutors.
- Civic House Educational Programming
- Plan and implement social justice educational programming, including the development of curriculum and facilitation of workshops that support Civic House’s Social Justice Framework;
- Collaborate and develop relationships with faculty, staff, and student leaders on campus – as well as community leaders off-campus – to foster dialogue and conversation around issues of social justice and civic engagement.
- Public Interest Career Workshops
- Implement and support programs that provide opportunities for interested students to learn about non-profit internships and career opportunities.
- Partner with Career Services to facilitate and develop workshops and panels
Preferred Qualifications & Essential Skills
- Experience in social justice education, civic engagement, non-profit organizations, community organizing, advocacy, public school teaching, or student development activities;
- Sincere interest in working closely with and mentoring undergraduate students;
- Strong communication skills, including facilitation of workshops, public speaking, and writing skills;
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Demonstrable interpersonal skills and high level of professional discretion and initiative;
- Proven organizational and program planning skills, and;
- Flexibility to work both independently and collaboratively with students, staff, and community partners
