College really does go beyond your major and the classes you take. For many, it offers the first taste of financial independence. And whether you’re applying for financial aid or managing your first credit card, the experience can be daunting. That’s why Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Delaware Valley (CCCS) and our FinanciallyHers program are excited to partner with Citibank to present a new college workshop for students and their parents. Going to College: Financial Aid and Financial Independence will look at the major facets of financial aid, including submitting the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) and the different types of aid that are available. Strategies for financial independence, such as managing a bank account and building a credit history, will also be discussed. The workshop will be presented by FinanciallyHers’ volunteer and uFinancial Representative Michele Burkholder.
“FinanciallyHers is geared to support women through every phase of their lives and as we all know sending children off to college is a very important and sometimes challenging time,” says Joy McManus, Program Manager for FinanciallyHers.
With rising tuitions, students are facing new financial challenges. This year, U.S. student debt crossed the $1 trillion mark, surpassing total 2010 credit card debt. “The information in this workshop is invaluable,” adds McManus. “It’s more important than ever for students and their parents to have a financial plan as they prepare for college. Developing a plan now will better help students in the spring when they’re preparing for college.”
Going to College: Financial Aid and Financial Independence is a special workshop because it’s open to the whole family. “We encourage women to not only bring their children who will be entering college soon, but also to bring other family members who will be involved in this process,” notes McManus.
If you have a junior or senior in high school (or younger, it’s never too early to start) we hope to see you at this workshop and work with you to get prepared for the financial independence that comes with going to college. Seating is limited, so we’re asking attendees to please register in advance.
The workshop will begin promptly at 10 am and end at 12 pm. Light refreshments will be provided. Any questions about this workshop can be directed to Adrienne Webb at awebb@cccsdv.org or (215) 563-5665 x 3354.
