Global Refugee Simulation & Conference
American Red Cross
Washington, D.C.

Do you have the courage and perseverance to survive the harsh conditions, political conflicts, and violence millions of people experience globally? Challenge your survival skills in realistic obstacles and environments that refugees and internally displaced persons face daily. Educate yourself and your peers in a pressing and ongoing human rights issue at the world’s largest refugee simulation in Washington, DC.

The American Red Cross Global Refugee Simulation & Conference (GRSC) provides an experiential learning opportunity that excites, engages, and inspires young people to action. Each day millions of people around the world live displaced from their homes due to violence, persecution, and other various conflicts. This weekend-long learning experience on March 29-30, 2014 will take place in Bull Run Park, Virginia and feature the world’s first and largest refugee simulation. Our goal is to increase empathy for refugees and educate participants about International Humanitarian Law (IHL).

Sat, March 29: A realistic, six-hour refugee simulation, intended to educate participants about the challenges that refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) endure. Participants will work in groups simulating families to escape a war zone, traverse minefields, cross a border, and live in a refugee camp that will require securing food, seeking medical attention, and finding or building your own shelter.

Sun, March 30: Participants will add depth to their understanding of the issues through an interactive digital conference held in the American Red Cross Disaster Operations Center. Viewers of the Conference should maintain an online social media presence to interact with refugee experts and globally-renowned
speakers who will engage in a lively debate directly answering viewers’ questions in real-time via social media platforms.

Participant Fee: $20

Includes:
● Transportation from Foggy Bottom, DC to Bull Run Park, VA
● Simulation materials
● Online access to the high-level digital conference featuring world-renowned speakers
