Giving Cambodia Hope through Education

Noreen Neal, a high school senior, strives to improve the quality of education in Cambodia with an eco-friendly computer lab

When:         Saturday, February 27, 2010
6pm to 10:30 pm

Where:     Bossone Research Enterprise Center at Drexel University
31st and Market Street
Philadelphia, Pa 19104

What:         On February 27, 2010 at 7pm at the Bossone Center, Drexel University, Noreen Neal, a senior from Friends’ Central School, will be hosting an event featuring traditional Cambodian dances to help bring awareness and fund raise for the Russey Chroy Computer Lab Project.

Noreen has partnered with Champions of Caring and Cambodian Excellence Education Foundation, both 501 (c) (3) non-profit organizations, to establish an eco-friendly computer lab at the Russey Chroy School in rural Cambodia.  The computer lab will provide 351 students from 6th to 8th grade an opportunity to enhance their education. This project is also designed with sustainability in mind. The fund includes not just ten energy efficient computers and a laser printer but also maintenance, warranty, and internet             connection for the next ten years.

Why:         Cambodia has always been personal to Noreen because both of her parents are Cambodian immigrants. Her mother was a survivor of the Khmer Rouge Genocide and her father nearly escaped it. She grew up hearing juxtaposition of beautiful, happy Cambodia and bloody images of Cambodia.

When she joined Champions of Caring (http://www.championsofcaring.org) in 11th grade she knew that she wanted to help Cambodia.  Noreen wanted to improve the education in Cambodia because a better education it will ultimately tackle all the issues in Cambodia by giving students to opportunity to have power to change their future, communities, and our world.
