Posted by on February 4, 2005

Many of you may already be aware that The Institute for Global Education and Service Learning has been selected as the 2006 NYLC conference host. We are excited to have the National Service Learning Conference here in Philadelphia. There are many opportunities for you and your organization to become involved. I have listed the committees below. Please email me at [email protected] by Tuesday, February 1 with your committee chair/memeber preference. We really look forward to working with you!
Sincerely,
Michelle Grimley
2006 NYLC Conference Coordinator

Steering Committee: Comprised of the committee co-chairs. The Steering Committee should meet on a regular basis to monitor the task list and timelines of all committees, and provides overall coordination of the responsibilities.

Conference Service Corps (CSC): The Conference Service Corps is established as volunteers to “work” the conference, and fulfill tasks such as stuffing bags, directing attendees to various workshops throughout the convention center, acting as room and hall monitors, helping with registration, collecting evaluations, and other tasks as needed. The Corps is comprised of a minimum of 50 volunteers. They will receive free conference registration and on-site food (paid for by scholarship development).

On and Off-Site Service Projects Committee: This committee will plan, set up and oversee projects for conference participants that provide opportunities for interactive on-site and off-site based service-learning experiences. The planning, set-up and oversight for these projects includes: site selection, management, communication, signage, attendee registration, submitting written descriptions and photographs (if applicable) for program guide, providing information for transportation, meals, and any other special needs as assessed
by this committee.

Site Visits Committee: Site Visits will be set up to exemplary service-learning program sites for conference participants to visit. The planning, set-up and overseeing for these site visits includes: site selection, management, communication, signage, attendee registration, submitting description for program guide, providing information on transportation and any other special needs as assessed by this committee.

Regional Showcase Committee: (Chair: Kathia Monard-Weissman) This committee will coordinate a showcase consisting of one participant (school) from each of the ten states within the Mid-Atlantic region as a part of the opening celebration. The committee will work with the SEAs in each of the states to identify potential showcase participants. In conjunction with the state SEAs, the committee will contact potential showcase participants, make decision on who will be showcased, how many, what the logistical needs are, and coordinate the communication with those selected. The committee must: provide a description for the program guide; signage for showcase (or communicate on how signage will be handled); be on-site to help coordinate setting-up of the showcase; and provide information on any special needs. (*Showcase is defined as a display on a six-foot table that describes this exemplary service-learning
school-based project)

Entertainment and Ambiance Committee: This committee is responsible for the pre-selection, recommendation, and management of the following elements of the conference:
. Arts and Entertainment for the opening reception
. Entertainment, ambiance and pageantry for the Opening Plenary – including but not limited to: musical entertainment, processional, incorporation of theme and service-learning elements, choreography, set-design
. Entertainment for State Farm Awards Luncheon
. Entertainment for dinner event(s)
. Other Entertainment needs as determined.
. Ambiance for exhibit hall, walkways, plenary area in both hotel and convention center

This committee is also responsible for the logistical coordination of all arts and entertainment elements of the conference. These needs and requirements include, but are not limited to, audio-visual, staging, scripting, transportation and meals.

National Service-Learning Conference Workshop Committee: This committee will be established to carry out the peer-review of the workshop RFPs and select conference workshop presenters. The goal of this committee is to keep a national focus for the conference.

The Youth Committee: This committee is responsible for the development and participation of youth involvement and youth voice at the Conference. The committee consists of representatives from the NYLC and two youths from IGESL (and other partner representatives as determined at a future time), should be chaired by a IGESL youth, and has oversight by NYLC/(IGESL staffs. Other
responsibilities include providing youth MC’s for the conference; ensuring the presence of youth in workshops, featured forums and events; and, the coordination of the ambiance of the “youth room” and the events that take place in it.
