Full-Time Tutor & Mentor, City Year AmeriCorps Member

WHAT YOU’LL DO
Your service will focus on helping students get and/or remain on track to graduate by providing academic support, delivering behavior and attendance coaching and encouraging student engagement to promote a positive school climate. You’ll be assigned to a diverse team of 8-15 young adults and serve with them during the 2020–2021 school year. Beginning each day before the first school bell rings and staying until the last child leaves the after-school program, you’ll serve students, schools and communities in a variety of ways.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Academic Support
- Assist school administrators and teachers in identifying students who would benefit from participating in City Year programs
- Plan tutoring sessions and provide small group and one-to-one literacy and/or math tutoring to elementary, middle and high school youth
- Support student academic success in the classroom by partnering with teachers and school staff to facilitate differentiated learning activities
- Create, support and/or co-lead literacy and/or math focused events to enrich school literacy and/or math culture and climate
- Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs recognizing and appreciating growth and/or achievement in literacy and/or math
- Record time spent with students providing small group and one-to-one tutoring in our data management system
- Participate in and/or lead Facilitated Data Review and Student Progress Monitoring meetings utilizing business intelligence tools per team schedule
- Support a positive classroom environment by reinforcing the teacher’s classroom routines and expectations and encouraging on-task student engagement
- Participate in leadership development training, be coached by staff members to improve performance and to participate as a member of the team and site
Engagement & Positive School Climate Participation
- Provide small group and one-to-one social-emotional skills development programs and attendance coaching to elementary, middle and high school youth
- Support and/or conduct extended day programming through facilitation of enriching activities for students before, during, and after school including, but not limited to, academic enrichment and intervention, homework support, recreation, service learning and leadership development
- Create, support and/or co-lead events or programs to recognize and appreciate significant growth and/or achievement in social-emotional development and positive behavior
- Engage students as leaders to help plan and/or lead event elements
- Record time spent with students providing social-emotional development programs, attendance coaching, and other services such as after school programming in our data management system
- Facilitate coaching sessions for small groups of students on building social-emotional learning skills
- Promote a positive learning environment by modeling positive peer behaviors like respect, timeliness, attendance and listening
- Create engaging classroom space
Secondary Activities May Include:
- Contributing to overall school performance by engaging parents,coordinating enrichment programs for students, serving as role models and helping to enhance the school culture
- Supporting and developing thematic events to engage community stakeholders
- Supporting, creating and/or co-leading events or programs that recognize and appreciate significant growth and/or achievement in attendance
- Welcoming students at the start of the school day
- Placing calls to the homes of absent students
- Providing homework assistance to a consistent group of students before and after school
- Participate in and/or lead Facilitated Data Review and Student Progress Monitoring meetings utilizing business intelligence tools per team schedule
