Position Summary
The Friends Liaison will coordinate AFSC staff in reaching out and involving Friends in the life of AFSC. The position will maintain an online presence that informs and engages Friends, write and edit materials for Friends audiences, and help other staff inform and engage Friends. The liaison will also be an initial point of contact for Friends, ensuring that Friends questions and ideas are represented to AFSC colleagues.
Compensation: Salary Range 16 – Exempt – Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.

The Central Office of the AFSC is a unionized workplace, represented by District Council 47 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, AFL-CIO. This is a Bargaining Unit II position.

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
1. Represent AFSC to Quaker communities and develop opportunities for Friends to participate with the AFSC. Coordinate an organization-wide plan for outreach, including visits, to Friends meetings, schools, and organizations. Develop plans and outreach materials that speak to Friends’ concerns. Support AFSC program and advancement staff, helping them engage Friends in their outreach.
2. Facilitate the orientation and ongoing involvement of Corporation members and other liaisons in monthly meetings, ensuring that all are kept up-to-date on AFSC’s progress and work. Regularly gather the opinions of Friends to help AFSC develop compelling materials and activities for Friends schools, newsletter and magazine editors, and meetings. Manage and track literature and material distribution to Friends meetings and institutions.
3. Serve as an initial point of contact for Friends with questions and comments about AFSC. Facilitate timely and thoughtful responses.
4. Coordinate and maintain social media outreach to Friends, including the Friends Connection blog. Work with the AFSC web team to engage Friends using current communications methods, such as Facebook or Twitter in 2011.
5. Provide staff support for the AFSC- Friends Relations Committee, including recording meeting highlights and action items and coordinating with General Secretary’s Office staff on Corporation business.
6. Help communicate to Friends and other audiences by helping write and edit for Quaker Action, AFSC’s web site. Ensure that AFSC’s work is covered in Friends newsletters, blogs, and magazines, sometimes by writing and editing, sometimes through connecting writers with the appropriate people.
7. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree or related work experience required.
Experience:
1. Five years of work experience in communications or other positions that require frequent outreach. Professional writing experience is desired.
2. At least one year’s experience writing for social media, using Facebook, blogs, or Twitter.
3. Experience with spreadsheet and database software, such as Excel, Access, or Google spreadsheets is required.
4. Experience giving oral presentations to large and small audiences is desired.
Other Required Skills and Abilities:
1. Familiarity with the Religious Society of Friends and respect for the concerns and language of Friends. Understand the diversity within the society of Friends.
2. Excellent critical thinking and project management skills required. Ability to manage multiple projects and to work under considerable pressure required.
3. Willingness and ability to travel throughout the U.S., and to work occasional evenings and weekends.
4. Ability to work independently, give attention to detail and follow through effectively.
5. Ability to decipher information and explain it effectively to others; good teaching/coaching skills.
6. Ability to use good judgment in setting priorities and taking initiative.
7. Flexibility and ability to perform diverse tasks in a timely way.
8. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with other staff.
9. Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
