New Awards Program to Recognize Unsung Heroes for Work on Behalf of Immigrants and Refugees
Deadline: February 28, 2011
The Freedom From Fear Award, a project of Public Interest Projects, is a new national award designed to honor ordinary people who commit extraordinary acts of courage on behalf of immigrants and refugees.
The award seeks to honor unsung heroes and heroines who are not professional advocates. Awardees will be people who have exposed themselves to considerable risk – whether physical, professional, economic, or social – and whose stories have moved others to action or awareness.
Following an open nomination process, fifteen individuals will be chosen in spring 2011 to receive the Freedom From Fear Award and a $5,000 cash prize. Awardees will have the option of assigning the award money to a nonprofit organization of their choice. The Freedom From Fear Award will also create an archive to celebrate the many acts of individual courage that make up the immigrant rights movement.
Self-nominations will be accepted with at least two references.
Visit the Freedom From Fear Award Web site for complete program information and the nomination form.
