FREE Virtual Forum: Education & Volunteerism in Pennsylvania – Feb 21

Posted by PA Department of Environmental Protection on February 7, 2023

Education and volunteerism will be the focus for the next Pennsylvania Lake Erie Environmental Forum (PALEEF), hosted virtually on February 21, 2023, 3:00-5:30 PM. Participation is free but registration is required. The forums are hosted by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Sea Grant.

Invited speakers from Pennsylvania Sea Grant, The School District of Philadelphia, Northwest Tri-county Intermediate Unit 5, and the Regional Science Consortium will discuss science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in Pennsylvania. Participants will hear from experienced and creative educators who have successfully implemented environmental literacy and sustainability in the curriculum. Discussions will cover innovative education programs and touch on Pennsylvania’s legislatively approved (2022) academic standards for Science, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Literacy and Sustainability (STEELS).

Following the education experts, Penn State Extension professionals will speak about existing volunteer programs occurring throughout the Commonwealth. Attendees will learn about programs that can spark interest for clean land and water, including the Master Watershed Steward program, Master Gardener program, 4-H, First Investigation of Stream Health (FISH), the Master Well Owner Network (MWON), and Greening the Lower Susquehanna (GLS): Volunteer Corp.

All formal and nonformal educators, volunteers, and anyone passionate about the topics of STEM, environmental literacy and sustainability, and volunteerism are encouraged to join us as we explore educational and environmental opportunities for youth and adults across Pennsylvania.

Act 48 hours for PA certified teachers may be available from school districts. A Certificate of Attendance and an agenda will be provided upon request following the conclusion of the Forum.

Participation is free, but registration is required. Contact Amber Stilwell, Pennsylvania Sea Grant’s Lake Erie Coastal Outreach Specialist, for additional details or with questions. The Forum agenda and links to previously recorded sessions are available online.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Penn State University, and through federal, state, and local funding.
