Warm weather composting workshops —
Learn to compost before the harvest!
The good news, for people whose evenings are tied up during the school year, is that — for the first time — we’ve squeezed in a late-summer session next Wednesday evening.
Independence Branch Library
18 South 7th Street
Center City
Wednesday, 9/21/05
sign-in 5:30
class 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Reminders about the structure of the program:
The City’s Recycling through Composting Program provides Philadelphia residents with free training about urban composting, including an introduction to worm “farming” for those who don’t have outdoor space.
The workshops are two hours long. After completing the workshop, Philadelphia residents are invited to join the Recycling through Composting Team. To join, participants sign a pledge to compost yard waste according to City guidelines.
The signed pledge form entitles a household to one home compost bin worth approximately $85. Residents interested in attending a compost-training workshop must pre-register by calling (215) 686-5444, then pressing #2 to leave a detailed message.
A recording is available on that line 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Be sure to have a pencil and paper ready when you call to list all the needed information.
Anyone is welcome to attend as a guest and receive training and a manual, but only pre-registered Philadelphia residents presenting appropriate identification
who have attended the entire class will be eligible to receive a back yard composter. If demand exceeds supply, priority will be given to the earliest registrants. Thanks to the support of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the City can make backyard compost bins available to participants at no charge.
The City of Philadelphia Streets Department is pleased to be partnering with neighborhood facilities of the Free Library of Philadelphia in extending the Recycling through Composting Program to the public.
Hope you can join us —
Margi
