Free Food Science Workshops at UPenn (LRSM)!
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO ANY TEACHER EMAILS AND/OR LISTSERVS. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GET THE WORD OUT!

We will be hosting two, free teachers workshops this summer on August 6th and 7th (2015), each of which will include exciting experimental labs involving food that can be used in school. Teachers will have an opportunity to try out these labs during the workshop. Planned activities for the first day include a discussion on kitchen tools, a lab on caramel, and a lab on gels. The second day there will be labs involving chocolate/fudge, ice cream, and foams although the schedule is still evolving. To sign up for either or both days, click here.

Further details:
The Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Matter (LRSM) at the University of Pennsylvania will offer two free materials science workshops. The workshops will enable teachers to improve their knowledge of materials science and learn how to perform middle/high school level materials science laboratory food-related experiments, which illustrate many concepts in this field. The workshops are based on an elective materials science course offered to students at Central High School, Philadelphia, by Schuyler Patton, a chemistry teacher at the school (with plenty of cooking experience), who has worked with LRSM faculty to develop the course.

The workshops offered will cover materials properties of food: Both workshops will be directed to exploring preparation and properties of food and culinary materials in the kitchen. Emphasis will be placed on simple, low cost experiments.

Teachers may sign up for one or both workshops, which can be taken individually. These workshops are planned for Thursday, Aug 6th and Friday, August 7th 2015. The workshops will be restricted to ~15 participants each, but if sufficient interest is shown by teachers, other workshops may be scheduled to meet the demand. The workshops will start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 pm with a break for lunch (included).

A more detailed outline of each workshop will be available soon. For further information email mlicurse@seas.upenn.edu and again click here to register.
