Film: The Impact of Trying & Locking Up Youth as Adults
Posted by on August 27, 2010
“I’m not a monster. I’m just a kid who made a mistake.”
This is the opening line of “Stolen Dreams: The Impact of Trying & Locking Up Youth as Adults,” a documentary created by The Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project (YASP). Every day, young people under the age of 18 are tried as adults in Philadelphia courts and shipped upstate to adult prisons. On television and in the newspaper, they are portrayed as monsters, thugs, and menaces to society.
For the first time, young people who have been thrown into our city’s adult criminal justice system are speaking out and telling their side of the story. Join us for the premiere of “Stolen Dreams” to hear these stories for yourself.
When: 7pm on Tuesday, August 31
Where: The International House of Philadelphia
3701 Chestnut St.
If you can’t make it on August 31st and want to see the film, email us and we will let you know about future screenings.
This film is part of YASP’s campaign to end the practice of automatically trying and incarcerating youth as adults in Pennsylvania. For more information on the campaign, visit: http://www.yasproject.com.
