Fall Instructors – Multiple Openings
About Philadelphia Futures:
Philadelphia Futures provides low-income, first-generation-to-college students with the tools, resources, and opportunities necessary for admission to and success in college. Our direct service programs, Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) and College Connection, provide academic enrichment, college guidance, and a range of other services for promising high school students attending Philadelphia’s public, charter, and parochial high schools.
We currently have three instructor openings.
Instructor – Literary Analysis Course for High School Sophomores
The Literary Analysis Instructor will teach three sections of approximately 15 students each in an intensive course designed to develop the reading, writing, communication, and time management skills that are crucial to college success. Students explore the concept of accountability in relation to literary characters and authors, including themselves, through various reading and writing assignments. The courses will meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, respectively, from 4:00pm-5:15pm in Center City Philadelphia throughout the fall term (exact location and dates TBD). Responsibilities include: (1) collaborating with Philadelphia Futures curriculum and academic specialists to develop, plan, and implement instruction designed to support preparation for college-level reading and writing; (2) reporting daily on student attendance, assignment completion, and progress; (3) grading and evaluating student work, including but not limited to submitting mid-semester and final term reports.
Instructor – Nonfiction Reading and Writing Course for High School Juniors
The Nonfiction Reading Instructor will teach three sections of approximately 15 students each in an intensive course designed to build writing, reading, and critical thinking skills as students prepare for the academic rigor of college work. Readings for the course will consist primarily of nonfiction texts concerning the theme of intelligence. The courses will be held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, respectively, from 4:00pm-5:15pm in Center City Philadelphia throughout the fall term (exact locations and dates TBD). Responsibilities include: (1) collaborating with Philadelphia Futures curriculum and academic specialists to develop, plan, and implement instruction designed to support preparation for college-level writing; (2) reporting daily on student attendance, assignment completion, and progress; (3) grading and evaluating student work, including but not limited to submitting mid-semester and final term reports.
Instructor – Creating My Vision for College Success Course for High School Juniors
The Creating My Vision Instructor will teach two sections of approximately 25 students each in an intensive course designed to build academic skills and enhance understanding of the college application process. Students read biographies about college journeys, envision a college journey for themselves, and complete a mock college application. The courses will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, respectively, from 4:00pm-5:15pm in Center City Philadelphia throughout the fall term (exact location and dates TBD). Responsibilities include: (1) collaborating with Philadelphia Futures curriculum and academic specialists to develop, plan, and implement instruction designed to support preparation for college admission; (2) reporting daily on student attendance, assignment completion, and progress; (3) grading and evaluating student work, including but not limited to submitting mid-semester and final term reports.
Qualifications for Instructional Positions: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Three-five years relevant teaching experience (preferably teaching high school level); demonstrated commitment to the education of Philadelphia public high school students and a clear understanding of related challenges; a teaching style that is structured, positive, and engaging; strong communication and organizational skills; FBI and Child Abuse Clearances if hired.
Dates: Varies – weekday afternoons from 4:00-5:15.
Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
