Fall 2013 Policy Internship

The Committee of Seventy fights for clean and effective government, fair elections and a better informed citizenry in Philadelphia and the region.

The Committee of Seventy has been called a “government watchdog,” “the elections people” and a “think tank.” In fact, we are all of these and much more.

We raise public awareness about complex issues in commonsense language that non-experts can relate to. We are willing to stand alone on tough issues or collaborate with likeminded organizations, make noise to call attention to reform opportunities or work quietly behind-the-scenes. Seventy uses its voice and influence to help provoke debate and affect real change.

Our goal is not just good government for its own sake, but fundamental change that will lead to our region’s growth.

Seventy’s policy interns are provided with hands-on experience in researching, summarizing and presenting valid issues of concern to the Philadelphia community through reports, briefs, etc.  You will work with the Policy Director and Senior Policy Analyst on various projects surrounding issues of policy and government including the November 2013 Voter Protection Program.

Responsibilities could include:
•    Conduct research in Seventy’s core mission areas of ethics and campaign finance reform, elections and government efficiency, including compilation of best practices in other jurisdictions.
•    Assist in the administration of the Voter Protection Program for the November 2013 municipal election; responsibilities may include communicating with partner groups, coordinating the volunteer network, and managing program materials.
•    Assist in overhauling of Seventy’s “How to Run for Political Office” manual.
•    Draft pieces for Seventy’s HOW PHILLY WORKS series for distribution to Seventy’s Board members and email subscribers.
•    Assist in preparing for Philadelphia City Council’s fall agenda.
•    Provide information to individuals who submit inquiries to Seventy, or refer them to the appropriate government agency.
•    Develop and edit website content.
•    Attend meetings or forums with representatives of government and community groups, as assigned.
•    Handle special “quick response” projects assigned by the President and CEO.

Applicants enrolled in law school or graduate studies relating to government and public policy are encouraged to apply, though undergraduates majoring in political science, history, or a related field will also be considered. All applicants must have: (1) a strong academic background; (2) excellent research and writing skills; and (3) experience or interest in political and/or governmental issues.
