The Philadelphia Youth Commission
The Commission represents Philadelphia’s youth in public hearings and gives testimony that reflects the youth perspective. We work with the city, non‐profits, community organizations, and private entities to develop strategies to improve the lives of Philadelphia’s youth. The Commission serves as a conduit for youth action no matter a young person’s background. The Commission also advises the Mayor, City Council, Philadelphia Public Schools, and other key decision makers inside and outside of city government.
We do this by:
• Commenting on legislation and policies that impact youth.
• Creating public service programs that improve the lives of youth.
• Monitoring and measuring the effectiveness of youth programs and policies.
• Partnering with neighborhood and youth organizations on shared issues.
• Preparing youth for leadership through appropriate training.
Executive Director Position Opening
The Philadelphia Youth Commission is currently looking for an Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for work done in the office, in the community, and in the Commission. The Executive Director is a City of Philadelphia exempt employee whose primary responsibility is to support the Philadelphia Youth Commission in achieving their legislative, policy and community goals. Duties and responsibilities include:
Office Management
• Manage office and budget, special projects and events
• Supervise volunteers and interns
• Supervise staff
• Collect and document progress made by Commissioners, staff, interns, and volunteers
• Fundraise
Community Outreach
• Develop collaborative relationships with all youth‐related government and community agencies such as
fraternal orders, service clubs, associations, churches, businesses, and youth organizations
• Advocate within communities for supporting youth programs out of the Youth Commission
• Participate in community events that are youth focused with Youth Commissioners
Youth Commission Support
• Act as a resource person to assist Youth Commissioners in achieving their legislative, policy and community-bridging goals.
• Inform all Commissioners regarding meetings, developments, action items, and other relevant events
• Professionally develop Commissioners to speak in front of Council, understand government procedures, and be political advocates
• Produce an annual report of the work and activities of the Youth Commission including future short‐ and long-term priorities and goals based on the Youth Commission’s strategic plan.
• Serve on the executive board of the Philadelphia Youth Commission as a non‐voting member Government Involvement
• Educate City Council, the Mayor and city departments on behalf of the Commission on the needs of the youth of Philadelphia, such as juvenile crime prevention, job opportunities for youth, recreational activities and educational opportunities
• Keep abreast of important political issues that may require youth attention
Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree required
• 3 to 5 years experience working with youth, youth development, and/or advocacy
• At least one year experience supervising staff
• Experience managing a budget or other professional financial responsibilities
• Ability to manage multiple projects
• Organizational skills
• Eagerness to reflect on and improve performance
