POSITION: Evaluation & Impact Data Intern
START DATE: September 2010 preferred
HOURS: Approximately 10 hours per week
DURATION: Minimum of one semester
LOCATION: The Bourse Building, 5th and Market, Philadelphia, PA
COMPENSATION: Unpaid; Course Credit
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, PDP
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
Established in 1989, Philadelphia Development Partnership (PDP) is a private nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide microentrepreneurs in the Greater Philadelphia region with the support and tools they need to thrive. PDP provides a comprehensive array of business development services and financial products for microenterprises, including: small business loans, peer microloans, peer group education and support, business skills training courses and workshops, technical assistance counseling and networking opportunities.
PDP’s target population consists of aspiring and established entrepreneurs who are low-income, minority or otherwise disadvantaged. Most of the microenterprises served are businesses with 1-5 employees including the owner, which require very little start-up capital ($35,000 or less). GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The primary responsibility of the intern will be to assist the PDP with the collection, organization and analysis of client data using current intake documents and client, business and loan management software, The Exceptional Assistant (TEA). Additional projects and experiences designed to contribute to PDP and further the intern’s knowledge of the domestic microenterprise field will be assigned—time permitting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Work with Director of Entrepreneurial Services and staff members to identify client intake forms, as well as other relevant documents, not yet transferred into TEA.
• Input data into TEA.
• Analyze current grant reporting requirements to develop and implement procedures to identify appropriate client data.
• Develop and implement system (in Excel) to categorize client information by income level, geographic region, industry, etc.
• Other data collection, data analysis and reporting duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, INTEREST, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Undergraduate or graduate student.
• Advanced study in information systems, nonprofit management, business administration, economics or related field preferred.
• Demonstrated experience and/or coursework in research methods and data analysis.
• Proven strong skills in relational databases, communication and Excel.
• Detail-oriented, highly organized and an independent self-starter.
• Interest in microfinance, poverty, community and economic development.
• Must be able to commit to at least one quarter/semester and work in-office.
