Job description
NOTE: This position is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Relocation assistance is not available for this position. Applicants must be available to interview at our Administrative Offices, no travel reimbursements are available.

Our Brothers’ Place is a low-demand overnight shelter and program for homeless men. The Engagement Specialist is responsible to build appropriate relationships with shelter guests to help them prioritize their needs and effectively direct them to appropriate professionals and outside organizations who will assist them in meeting their needs.

NOTE: This is an entry-level professional position.

Responsibilities:

  • Keep accurate hard copy files as necessary and maintain an online case file on the HMIS for each guest including: a Care Plan, activity notes, completed assessments, and other necessary documentation.
  • Assist guests during times of crisis, anxiety, apprehension or confusion, offering appropriate aid and support;
  • Lead, participate and observe the medication monitoring system, including: accurate record-keeping and organization of the narcotics and medication log books, and reporting and follow-up on medication errors; operate medication room, as required;
  • Report bed count on a daily basis to OSH, as required;
  • Encourage the guests’ personal growth through educational opportunities, appropriate employment, personal skill training, artistic expression and religious affiliation;
  • Contribute to overall community life through planning and participation in activities, both in-house and in the community at large;
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings and trainings;
  • Participate in weekly on-site case management team meeting, monthly Social Service meeting, and other individual supervision, as needed;
  • Document emergencies and incidents using appropriate communication channels, as needed;
  • Engage guests who stay at the shelter to build relationships and assess their needs for support services;
  • Actively communicate with staff about individual guest needs to streamline efforts and offer consistent, effective care;
  • Prioritize guests’ needs and refer men to appropriate outside agencies or professionals to help meet those needs;
  • Continually engage guests who have started working with outside supports to help monitor their progress;
  • Work with onsite external staff to make sure that guests who present mental health issues and/or are needing mental health intervention receive the help they need;
  • Work with staff to ensure that guests new to the shelter participate in an orientation session;
  • Share the responsibility of facilitating a daily orientation session for new guests;
  • Work cooperatively with other shelter staff to make sure guests are informed about in-house groups and activities, mental health and drug and alcohol treatment and housing opportunities;
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Engagement Specialist must be able to work a flexible schedule within a 40-hour workweek.
