Herb Block Foundation Invites LOIs for Encouraging Citizen Involvement Program

When Herb Block died in October 2001, he left $50 million and instructions to create a foundation dedicated to encouraging the art of editorial cartooning and to charitable and educational programs that promote and support the causes Block championed during his seventy-two years of cartooning. As such, the Herb Block Foundation is committed to defending basic freedoms, combating all forms of discrimination and prejudice, and improving the condition of the poor and underprivileged.

To help advance this mission, the foundation welcomes applications for its Encouraging Citizen Involvement program. Proposals may focus on citizen education and greater voter participation in the electoral process. All projects must be nonpartisan and may not involve lobbying for specific legislation or candidates. In addition to providing grants in this area, the foundation has initiated an annual public policy lecture program featuring prominent speakers on issues of national importance. Grants from between $5,000 and $25,000 will be awarded.

To be eligible, applicants must be a nonprofit organization under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Letters of Inquiry are due June 3. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by August 17, 2021.
