THE COMMITTEE OF SEVENTY
ELECTION DAY 2006
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7th, 2006
The Committee of Seventy, Philadelphia?s leading non-partisan political watchdog organization since 1904, is now recruiting volunteers for the November 2006 General Election, which features competitive races for Governor and U.S. Senator.
Although the electoral process has changed dramatically over the course of the last century, independent and genuinely non-partisan citizen oversight is still the most effective means of preventing fraud, protecting voting rights, and ensuring fair and accurate election results. Seventy?s Election Day volunteer program is a great Philadelphia tradition and it?s also the best way for you to demonstrate your commitment to fundamental rights and free elections. With 1681 polling places throughout the city, Seventy will need all the help we can get to effectively serve every neighborhood and handle potentially thousands of Election Day calls from Philadelphia voters. There are two ways for you can get involved and make a difference during the 2006 General Election:
In the OFFICE: answering telephone calls from voters, providing nonpartisan voting information, and documenting allegations of misconduct at polling places for field team investigation
In the FIELD: visiting polling places, providing information to election officials, investigating reports of Election Code and voting rights violations, and settling minor disputes
Volunteer shifts range from four to eight hours and prior experience is not necessary. All volunteers are required to attend a brief training seminar during October or early November. Several trainings will be offered at Seventy’s Center City offices, but if there is sufficient interest from your civic organization (at least 15-20 volunteers), we will also try to schedule a volunteer training at your offices or a community center convenient to your members.
