CHOP study shows impact of recession on child well-being
Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s PolicyLab and First Focus have released a report, The Effect of the Great Recession on Child Well-Being.
While the Great Recession technically ended in 2009, many families and children continue to feel its effects. This paper synthesizes evidence of the effects of the Great Recession on child well-being. It examines four domains – health, food security, housing stability, and maltreatment – and reviews the relationship of each to the well-being of children during the Great Recession.
Among other findings, the report calls into question the reliability of federal systems for the collection of child abuse and neglect data, which prompted First Focus to write a letter to Congressional leaders, encouraging them to review these discrepancies and consider specific potential policy solutions.
