Educational Farm Symposium

Please join us November 3-5, 2005 for the second Educational Farm Symposium. Sponsored by the Association of Nature Center Administrators, the symposium will be hosted by the Delaware Nature Society in Hockessin, Delaware.

Held at the Nature Society’s Ashland Nature Center, the symposium promises to be full of exciting field trips, informative facilitated sessions and in-depth workshops. Keynote speaker: Michael Ableman, The Center for Urban Agriculture at Fairview Gardens, Goleta, California.

Visit sites from urban to rural like Somerton Tank Farm in Philadelphia and the Rodale Institute, to name a few. Facilitated sessions and workshops will address program administration, education, farm and land management, historic farms, farmland preservation and advocacy.

Facilitated sessions and workshop topics include: grants, endowments and capital campaigns; developing, planning, marketing & managing a school program; livestock management; managing your farm for biodiversity; connecting nature & history on an educational farm; special events and farmland preservation & advocacy.

Speakers for the facilitated sessions and workshops will be joining us from Shelburne Farms, Natural Lands Trust, Historic Longstreet Farm, Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm, University of Delaware, Chippewa Nature Center, Delaware Department of Agriculture and Cincinnati Nature Center to name a few.

Three day cost for registration $275 (includes field trips, lunches & dinners, evening entertainment, transportation to hotel & field trip sites, all facilitated sessions and workshops). Other options available.

Hotel accommodations – a limited number of rooms are being held at the Hampton Inn – Newark (DE) at a special rate of $75 per room/night – double occupancy. Call 1-800-HAMPTON for reservations ask for the Hampton Inn – Newark. When transferred to the Hampton Inn Newark, mention that you are with the farm symposium to get the special rate.

Location – Ashland Nature Center is nine miles northwest of Wilmington, DE; 11 miles north of Newark, DE; and about 30 miles south of Philadelphia. If flying, Philadelphia Airport is the closest and free shuttles are offered for this symposium (see registration form). Other regional airports include Baltimore MD; Newark, NJ; and Dulles (Washington, D.C)–registrants will need to arrange their own shuttles.
