Education Specialist

Posted by The Attic Youth Center on May 5, 2014

The Attic Youth Center is seeking a dynamic, insightful, and energetic individual to serve as the Education Specialist of The Bryson Institute, The Attic Youth Center’s outreach and education program.

The Attic Youth Center (The Attic) is Philadelphia’s only agency exclusively serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth. The mission of The Attic is to create opportunities for LGBTQ youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community, and to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society.

Since 2001, The Bryson Institute of The Attic Youth Center has offered dynamic, interactive, and educational trainings around best practices for working with LGBTQ individuals. Our goal is to improve the climate and support systems for LGBTQ youth in their everyday environments by fostering understanding, imparting knowledge, and providing strategies for creating safe and affirming environments.

The Education Specialist will work with the Director of The Bryson Institute to provide a series of LGBTQ trainings to those who work with youth in a variety of settings including schools, social service agencies, religious groups, and various community settings. In addition, the Education Specialist will be tasked with facilitating workshops with middle and high school youth. As a primary facilitator for Bryson Institute trainings, the Education Specialist will utilize Attic curricula including presentations on PowerPoint, group activities, and handout materials, and where relevant, lead LGBTQ youth panelists in sharing their stories at trainings. Trainings occur at sites throughout the region, typically last between two hours to a full day, and periodically occur in the evening and/or during the weekend.
