EDUCATION FOR LIBERATION: WORKSHOP ON POWER & OPPRESSION
An Introduction to Paulo Freire’s Concepts & Techniques
March 10+11, 2018, 8:30am to 5:30pm @ Philadelphia Student Union, 501 S 52nd Street, Philadelphia PA 19143
TO SEE. TO ANALYZE. TO ACT. Education for Liberation is a hands-on Power and Oppression Organizing Workshop. We use Popular Education concepts and techniques based on the educational participatory approaches developed by two Brazilian political organizers: Educator/Philosopher, Paulo Freire, author of “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” and Theater Director, Augusto Boal, founder of the Theater of the Oppressed.
In this Introductory Workshop you will be exposed to Education for Liberation and its practical application. Also, through practice you will experience three basic steps of the Paulo Freire Education for Liberation:
-To express and see reality as it is experienced by the participants;
-To understand this reality by analyzing it and exploring the root causes of problems;
-To act in order to change this reality.
Day I: Power and Oppression
Day II: Paulo Freire Power Analysis for Strategic Planning
Framed as a power analysis for decolonizing the mind and empowering oppressed communities in struggle. This workshop is designed for community organizers, educators, labor, political, and solidarity activists to understand our community within a historical context using a race, class, and gender lens. Also, to develop the necessary skills to collectively plan and implement effective strategies for social action to transform ourselves and our communities.
We will create a safe space for dialogue and for learning new communication skills. We ask all participants to be open, suspend judgment, and lean into discomfort. Come prepared to play powerfully and create community.
WHAT TO BRING: Your love for humanity, something that represents your culture for the community alter, loose-fitted clothing, percussion/musical instruments, lunch to share, & whatever you need to be present.
Your facilitators are multi-generational organizers/educators in the movement to transform the world.
Workshop Cost: $350. Sliding Scale is available. A few scholarships are also available in exchange for volunteer hours with Urban Tree Connection, our benefiting local organization. We want everyone who would like to participate to be able to. High school youth doing organizing work attend free!
